It’s Time to Inspire Your Kids to Run

October 20, 2016 – 0 Comments

Running is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle.

Besides enjoying the health benefits, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are able to efficiently tackle physical & emotional challenges- from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.
Running is a great activity to help kids build endurance, which is developed when kids regularly engage in aerobic activity.

It offers kids the sense of freedom and the sense of reward & achievement when they finish.
It even teaches them self-respect, commitment and builds up their self-esteem, all of which are important values for kids to learn and build on in their lives.

However, there obviously is something which might be hindering your young athlete to involve in the running gait and this could be because:-
  • Running is interpreted as competition, where the fastest are the “kings of the hill”, and the slowest are mocked and made fun of. This proves to be a major reason why kids end up hating running.
  •  For many, running is a form of punishment; the runs your coach makes you do after you make a mistake on court, the sprint to catch the bus before school, the dash to the class before you are counted late.

However, this perception of children is groundless and needs to be rectified.
I believe, that parents and coaches should understand the best ways to help their kids to be motivated for the run:-

  • BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL:-
Most kids will follow the lead of their parents. If they see their parents taking good care of themselves through exercise and running, they will want to follow in their footsteps too.

  • CREATE A GOAL TOGETHER:-
Goals give a sense of direction, it is thereby extremely necessary for a parent to set goals along with their children and create an aim to follow. It’s necessary to train with your kid rather than just instructing and commanding.

  • THE COMMITMENT CONTRACT:-
Self-motivation can only be instilled into your young runner if he values his promises and commitments. It’s extremely necessary to set goals and stay committed to accomplish them.
For these reasons, a parent might need their children to make promises to chase their targets. Try to remind your children constantly, about their commitments and the promises made by them.

  • NEVER WEIGH DOWN:-
Goals are a prerequisite but it’s equally essential to remember that goals should not become expectations that weigh down athletes.
It’s good to have a goal & work towards it and evaluate it but it’s inappropriate to place high expectations on your athletes. Words such as “You HAVE to run 5000 meters” will only drastically bring down their morale if not met. Rather try replacing with “Would you like to run 5000 meters”

  • CELEBRATE:-
Celebration is that essence of motivation which boosts your child like nothing else.
“How about a dinner at his favorite place after he wins the league?”

A special reward after the event brings about a sense of achievement in your kid and inspires them. They learn to admire themselves, and this helps them put their best foot forward.
